Vs. In Spanish
I have yet to meet a Spanish person that didn’t like soccer (fútbol, that is). For some reason, it’s like an obsession in an even more ubiquitous way than American football is in the states. Everyone has a favorite team, and the rivalries can be quite intense.
If you are planning on attending a soccer match, or just want to discuss the specifics the next day, you need to know who is playing (of course). So how do you say “versus” in Spanish?
Well, you can technically just say “versus” and you will be understood. It is perfectly acceptable to say “Estados Unidos versus Colombia”. However, you may also hear “contra”, which basically translates to “against”. As in, “Chile contra Colombia”. In some less common situations, you may hear “frente a”. This is usually used to compare two ideas, as in “city life versus country life” (“la vida de ciudad frente a la vida del campo”).
How do you say “vs.” in Spanish?
In English it is common the abbreviate “versus” as “vs.”, so how do you abbreviate “versus” in Spanish? Well… it’s the same! “Vs.” means “versus in Spanish, as well. Contra does not really have a widespread abbreviation.
Now you know how to say versus in Spanish. You won’t only use this for sports matches, but political elections, arguments, even preferences.
