How do you call someone your best friend in Spanish?
When you study abroad, you are bound to make some of the closest friends you ever have in your life. Much like when you first go off to college, you are going to be surrounded by like-minded people who are going through a similar experience as you. There is something about being in an unfamiliar place together at the same time that brings people together and makes them want to connect.
Years later, I am still close with many of the people that were involved in my study abroad program. Many of them were people from my university back home that I never knew existed until we ended up in Spain together. We may have lived down the hall in the United States, but it took study abroad to bring us together. Others were folks from other universities across the United States and the world, that just happened to be on a similar program at a nearby university. Still others were natives of Spain that I met during my excursions.

If you want to say “we are best friends” in Spanish, you should use the nosotros form of the verb ser, “somos”. You use ser instead of estar because there is a sense that friendship is a more permanent thing, whereas estar is used for more temporary situations, such as how you are feeling that day. If both parties are male, or one party is male and the other is female, you would say “Somos mejores amigos”. If both parties are female, you would say “Somos mejores amigas”.
